What Does “Energy” Mean in a Tarot Reading?

If you've ever heard a tarot reader describe a situation as having good energy, difficult energy, or changing energy, you might have wondered what that actually means.

In tarot readings, the word "energy" is often used to describe the overall character of a situation: the feelings involved, the dynamics between people, the circumstances surrounding an event, or the direction things appear to be taking.

For example, imagine you've recently joined a new social group. Everyone is polite, conversations are pleasant, and nothing obviously seems wrong. Yet something about the group feels competitive. People seem more concerned with how they compare to one another than with getting to know each other.

A reading might describe the group's energy as competitive. That doesn't necessarily mean anyone intends to cause trouble. It describes the atmosphere and the dynamic that seem to shape people's interactions.

The same word can mean something different in another context. In a reading about a new project, "positive energy" might refer to enthusiasm, momentum, and favorable circumstances. In a reading about a strained friendship, it might describe a willingness to reconnect or a gradual easing of tension.

This is why the word can't always be understood on its own. "Good energy" doesn't automatically mean that everything will go well, just as "difficult energy" doesn't necessarily mean something bad will happen. The meaning depends on what is being discussed and how the rest of the reading develops.

When a reader uses the word "energy," the useful question is what that description refers to in your particular situation. Is it about someone's attitude, the atmosphere between people, the conditions surrounding an event, or a change that may be taking place?

Without that context, the word can sound vague. With it, the description can become much more specific.
